❝I didn't talk about it at all for 57 years.❞
Sumiko Ogata was 13 years old at the time of the atomic bombing.
She was exposed to the bombing at her home in Tokaichi-machi, about 0.7 kilometers from the hypocenter.
At that time, Ms. Ogata was a second-year student at Hiroshima Jogakuin Girls High School.
She was working in Zakoba-cho every day as a mobilized student, but on Aug. 6 she felt ill and stayed home.
She was rescued from her collapsed house and then caught in the black rain, when she arrived at the evacuation site by the Yamategawa River.
About two weeks later she fell unconscious, and when she woke up, her aunt who had also been exposed to the atomic bomb had died.
On behalf of her schoolmates who died at their mobilization site, Ms. Ogata continues to give testimonies, feeling that it is her mission. |
