Tomioka Itsue was 25 years old at that time. She was exposed to the bombing in her parents’ home in Shinjo-cho, 3.2 kilometers away from the hypocenter.
It had felt like a massive orange substance had poured into her room from under the eaves, and she assumed that an incendiary bomb had directly hit the house.
What impressed her most was a scene at night where children were squatting down in fear of the central part of the city, burning red in the darkness.
Due to food shortage after the war, her family lived by bartering, whereby she exchanged her family's kimono for food to stave off hunger.
She wished that humanity will not use horrible nuclear weapons anymore, and talks about the absurdity of wars. |
