32 years old at the time.Ms. Kurihara was in Gion-machi, 4km from the hypocenter, when the bomb was dropped. A poet, she has spent the time after the war in exchange activities with the world’s scholars, and appealing for peace. In the midst of tight regulations on speech, in 1946 she helped her husband Tadaichi Kurihara publish a literary collection, ‘Chugoku Culture – Inaugural Issue’, which contained a number of a-bomb testimonies and poetry. Immediately after the bombing, Ms. Kurihara herself published her poem to the child she gave birth to in a basement, ‘Bringing Forth New Life’. |
