When the army was stationed in Hiroshima, a hospital was built there specifically for military personnel. When the Sino-Japanese war began (1937), patients increased dramatically, and branches were hurriedly constructed in the city and surrounding suburbs. Hiroshima First Army Hospital was in Moto-machi, where military facilities were concentrated. At the time of the bombing, it had 300 patients.
