Hirotoshi Sano, who created this picture, arrived at the mouth of the Otagawa River in Hiroshima City by boat around 4:30 am on August 7 to search for his mother.

“A fish - probably a large crucian carp - that had lost its dorsal fin and had about half its scales burnt off, was floating on the surface of the water near the edge of the boat. Later, I realized that this fish must have been exposed to intense radiation near the surface of the water when the atomic bomb exploded."
