Notes from the artist:
Among those who had died in great agony, there were some whose searching families had come and taken their bodies away, but there were more whose names and addresses were unknown and who eventually were cremated at our hands. Students, teachers, and soldiers who had been stationed at our school dug holes in the field of lotuses beyond the schoolyard. We gathered blocks of wood and lumber from the Second Hiroshima Prefectural Girls High School, which had been completely destroyed, and made piles upon which we burned bodies. It was impossible to cremate them completely and on the next day the crows had arrived early and were picking at what looked like pieces of flesh spread out across the schoolyard. Gruesome is the only word that could describe it.
These sensitive girls, not yet 20 years old, must have been scarred mentally. We spent our days busily with no room for sentimentality.
