Description | Mom! 1,050-1,400m from the hypocenter Near Yagembori and Tsurumi Bridge August 6, 1945, around 11:00 a.m. Drawn by Hisayuki Fujioka (age 12 at the time of the bombing) [Excerpt of artist comment] “Hurry, hurry!” Desperate to get away from the approaching fire, a mother holding her child by the hand was running but not very successfully because of her long kimono. The mother let go of her child, shouting, “Run, quickly!” and “I’ll catch up with you!” At that very moment, a tornado-like swirl of fire engulfed and swallowed the mother. The child collapsed into tears, screaming “Mom, mom!” |
