Description | Dawn came as I shivered with my mother and brothers and sisters. 2,600 m from the hypocenter, Mitaki-cho August 6, 1945, night Harumi Watanabe (8 at the time of the bombing, 65 when she drew this picture) Artist's explanation I met a woman from the neighborhood who told me my mother had fled to a bamboo grove. My newborn sister's head and face were covered with red clay. My brothers were bleeding from their heads. That night, we looked from pitch darkness toward the city. Bright red flames climbed from ground to sky, burning the entire city. However many years pass, that sight will always remain in the back of my mind. My father never came back. |
