Description | Countless bodies floating in the river 2,400m from the hypocenter Motoyasugawa River Yoshijima-hon-machi (now, Yoshijima-higashi) August 7, 1945, morning Drawn by Shunzaburo Tanabe (age 20 at the time of the bombing) [Excerpt of artist comment] The morning was tranquil, as if nothing had happened. The sight of the Motoyasugawa River horrified me. The Seto Inland Sea was at high tide, making water levels high in the river, which was carrying countless floating bodies, all white and bloated like swine. As if reluctant to leave Hiroshima, the thousands of corpses ebbed and flowed with the tide, touching and leaving the river banks again and again, perpetually it seemed to me, until they ascended to heaven. |
