Description | My sister, now a skeleton 900 m from the hypocenter, East Public Health Center, Shinsenba-cho (now, Ko-machi) August 7, 1945, evening Yasuko Sato (17 at the time of the bombing, 74 when she drew this picture) Artist's explanation My older sister worked at a public health center. When the 6th turned to evening, we thought she had not returned because she was tending to the injured. Soon, we heard that the entire city had been destroyed. The next day we headed to Hiroshima to search for her. When we finally arrived, we could find no sign of her. "She was new in her workplace, so she must have been working at the reception area, right about there." My father pointed to two skeletons, one lying on the other. We were speechless. Looking around the area, we saw her lunchbox. Not knowing which skeleton was hers, we collected a few bones from each and carried them home in her lunchbox. |
