Description | Quickly, ask their names and addresses 2,670m from the hypocenter Hiroshima Army Clothing Depot Deshio-cho (now, Deshio 2-chome) August 6, 1945 Drawn by Yasuko Sato (age 17 at the time of the bombing) [Excerpt of artist comment] “Quickly, ask their names and addresses,” instructed the probationary officer, so I went around asking the names and addresses of injured people. Some I could not hear, though they were trying to speak. Some were already dead. One boy replied clearly, “Hitoshi Miyake of Onaga-machi. 1st-year, class 1 student at First Hiroshima Prefectural Junior High School.” When I went back later Hitoshi was already dead. Out of sympathy, I sought out the boy’s parents to report his death. The parents could do nothing but cry at the news. |
