Description | Begging for water August 6, 1945, around 2:00 pm Keiji Harada (15 at time of bombing, 72 at time of drawing) [Notes from the artist] Concerned for my father's safety, I dressed lightly in shorts and an undershirt, took my mother's geta sandals and cycled into town without telling her. Somewhere around Nakajima-cho, I encountered young girls who had been exposed to the atomic bomb while working at a demolition site. They begged me for water. As I rushed to give them some, a military policeman warned me, so I stopped. I can still remember it and am filled with regret since they had no other means for getting water. |
