[Excerpt of artist comment]
I accompanied my uncle, who returned to the site of his burned-down house, where his wife (my aunt) was present at the time of the bombing. He gasped and froze near the kitchen door, lost for words. In front of us was a whole, standing skeleton. My uncle burst into tears. “It must have been so hot! Forgive me, forgive me!” He tried to lift the skull gently with both hands, when the whole skeleton crumbled to the ground.
According to my uncle, he had just left home in the morning when the atomic bomb fell. He took back immediately and looked for his wife. He heard her calling back from inside the fallen house, and tried to rescue her, but couldn’t reach her, hindered by large pillars, beams and mud walls. The fire was strong, and drawing closer. He kept talking to his wife to keep her spirits up, but when she saw the smoke starting to shoot up from nearby, she shouted to him, sobbing, “Papa, get away, quickly!” She kept shouting and shouting, “Papa, go, quickly!” but her voice grew smaller and smaller. He heard her for the last time when she shouted “Papa!” with all her might. My uncle said no more. Everyone just cried and cried.
