Description | As the fires bore down on our house, I led my grandmother out of the house. The young mother in the opposite house stood in the street, her face pale, saying, “My baby died.” I took my four-year-old brother from the rescue station to the hilltop and laid him down. Next to him was a large girl who appeared to be a high school student. Her face was bright red and she looked to be in great pain. As her body gradually swelled, she asked, “Please loosen the drawstring of my bloomers.” By that time my little brother had died, so I took his air-raid hood and lay it under her head for a pillow. |
