| Description | Mother and child begging for water 1,100 m from the hypocenter, near Fujimi-cho August 6, 1945, about 6:30 p.m. Takahito Mori (22 at the time of the bombing, 79 when he drew this picture) Explanation in picture A mother carrying a baby on her back and holding a small boy's hand trudged slowly toward me. All three were nearly naked and had terrible burns. The mother's skin was dangling from her shoulders and chest. She appeared to be blind. The baby on her back looked dead. The small boy was not so much being led as leading his mother. As they approached, the mother, in a small voice, said, "Water, water, please. We haven't had anything to drink since morning." |
