Description | A young woman cremating her younger brother 980 m from the hypocenter, West side of Hiroshima Castle, Moto-machi August 9, 1945, about 4:00 p.m. Torao Izuhara (23 at the time of the bombing, 80 when he drew this picture) Artist's explanation A girl of 17 or 18 had stood two tatami mats on their sides in an inverted "V". Where on that scorched plain had she found two completely unblemished mats? The military officer asked her, "What happened?" She answered, "We found my younger brother's corpse, and now I am going to burn it." We peered inside and saw the head of a boy around ten framed by pieces of wood. Instinctively, we joined our palms in prayer. |
