Description | Middle school boys killed with no time to flee 600m from the hypocenter Nakajima-shin-machi (now, Nakajima-cho) August 7, 1945, around 10:00 a.m. Drawn by Kiyoso Matsumoto (age 17 at the time of the bombing) [Excerpt of artist comment] At a location west of today’s International Conference Center, I found students of the Second Junior High School. I identified a belt buckle bearing the school emblem. Some of the name badges were legible. One was a 1st-year student from class 6, a classmate of my younger brother Masaru. It appeared they did not have the time to move even half a step before they died. Some had lifted their heads, which had turned into white skulls. Some had their skulls missing, with just the neck bones remaining. Their lower bodies, buried in the rubble, were still with flesh. The blaze that destroyed the building cremated only their upper bodies. |
