Description | Collecting bones we thought might be my father's 410 m from the hypocenter, in front of Honkawa Elementary School, Kajiya-cho (now, Honkawa-cho 1-chome) August 8, 1945, 10:00 a.m. Drawing by Ichiro Kono Text by Susumu Yamasaki (10 at the time of the bombing) Artist's explanation I was in the 4th grade. My father was exposed and killed at his workplace in Hiroshima. Early that morning, mother prayed and wept at the family Buddhist altar. She told us, "In my dream, your father came home and was hugging you three kids and brushing your cheeks with his. Then I woke up. He is not alive. It was his soul that came home." Mother, my younger sister, and I set out to look for him, but we never learned what became of him. Figuring a skeleton we found at his workplace was probably his, we brought home some of those bones. |
