Description | Corpses upon corpses 2,600m from the hypocenter Downstream in the Honkawa River Funairi-kawaguchi-cho (now, Funairi-minami) August 9, 1945, morning Drawn by Yasue Enomoto (age 20 at the time of the bombing) [Excerpt of artist comment] The sight of corpses upon corpses left me numb. I was shocked not only by the sheer number of drifting corpses but also by the fact that I and my older sister had pushed our way through them—not aware that they were humans—to wash our faces and bodies in the river last night in the dark. Just what is a human being? I was stunned by the apparent insignificance of human life, and felt very strongly that a tragedy like this should never ever be repeated. |
