Description | Derailed, twisted streetcar and the charred corpse of the driver 1,000 m from the hypocenter, in front of City Hall (Kokutaiji-machi) August 7, 1945, 6:00a.m. Kyoichi Wakimoto (48 at the time of the bombing, 78 when he drew this picture) Explanation in picture The half-destroyed streetcar was knocked off the rail and tilted toward City Hall. Nearby a man covered in blood must have died instantly. A horse lay hairless, both mane and tail burned off. Unbelievably, the driver was burned completely black but remained erect. I can never forget the pitiful sight of that man. |
