Description | Hiroshima Industrial Promotion Hall beginning to burn Drawing-Text / Eizo Nomura Around 8:30 a.m. August 6, 1945 Approx. 160m from the hypocenter Sarugaku-cho (now Otemachi 1-chome) "Nothing but black smoke, all around me, on the ground and in the sky. Through that smoke loomed the Fuel Hall from which I had just managed to escape. In front of me, across the river, stood the Industrial Promotion Hall. To the left I could see the Chamber of Commerce and Industry building (then called Hiroshima Prefectural Commerce Association). Beneath the smoke, the flames were growing. Before long, some window frames of the Fuel Hall started burning, then they all were. Then flames entered the building. After a short while, the Promotion Hall suffered the same fate. In no time, flames were burning the Chamber of Commerce and Industry as well, thrusting in through the windows." Excerpt from his memoir |
