August 6, 1945, around 14:00 Kazue Kobayashi (30 at time of bombing, 60 at time of drawing) [Notes from the artist] Around 2 o'clock in the afternoon on August 6th, I saw a boy of about 15 or 16 vacantly holding onto the guardrail of the bridge. When I asked what was wrong, he told me how he and his family had been trapped under the rubble of their house in Takajo-machi, close to the hypocenter. Only he managed to escape. Arriving here, he was puzzled as to what to do next. |
