It was my second day searching for a fellow soldier. Near Hijiyama Hill, I heard that a soldier from Kure was in a house nearby, so I hurried there. There must have been 20 to 30 people in that house, but I couldn't even tell their gender. I asked, “Excuse me, is there anyone here from the Kure Naval Dockyard?” Someone nearby pointed to a man and I recognized Kawai, who was from Osaka. “Is that you, Kawai?” I asked.
