Description | My husband lit matches and drew eyebrows on me with the charred wood. 2,200 m from the hypocenter, Funairi-Kawaguchi-cho December 1945 Hatsue Kusumi (36 at the time of the bombing, 66 when she drew this picture) Artist's explanation In the winter, we hung mosquito netting around our futon (bedding) to keep the snow off. My facial burns finally started to heal, and in the night I removed the bandages before I slept. I saw my husband lighting and blowing out one match after another. In my sleepy stupor, I became aware of a tingling around my eyes. I leapt up to find that my husband had been drawing on my missing eyebrows with charcoal. He said he felt sad sleeping next to a ghost without eyebrows. |
