If not removed, the injury would fester and he would lose his leg. There was no anesthesia available. We kept telling him, 'Hold on, it'll be over soon,'but the glass was very deep and hard to remove. 'Just leave the glass in!' 'If we don't take it out, we'll lose the war.'
