Description | The burnt corpses of co-workers who did not make it out Drawing - Text / Sadako Doi August 7, 1945 Approx. 710m from the hypocenter Ebisu-cho "When we finally made it to Fukuya Department Store, it was completely gutted. Everything in and around it was burnt down to nothing. Near my feet lay a friend-now transformed into a burnt corpse-who had worked in the same office. It seemed that many corpses were still inside, but we could not approach them because of the heat. Thinking how narrowly I had escaped their fate, I silently placed my hands together in prayer."Excerpt from her memoir |
