Description | Charred bodies leaning against a cistern and corpses of children with dismembered arms and legs 200m from the hypocenter/Near Kamiya-cho August 6, 1945 Miharu Houki (35 at the time of the bombing, 65 when she drew this picture) Explanation in picture Inside the cisterns were people charred black, writhing in agony. There were some charred black who had evidently sought water and got themselves covered with it. I saw one that seemed to be my child. Another one seemed to be my aunt, this one my elder sister, that one a passerby. Three innocent children who lived next door had all come apart-arms, legs, torsos―so pitiful. This horrific scene which I can never express with either brush or word remains imprinted clearly in my mind. |
