Those alive invariably craved for water 1,210m from the hypocenter Hiroshima Higashi Police Station Shimo-yanagi-cho (now, Kanayama-cho) August 9, 1945, morning Drawn by Shoichi Furukawa (age 32 at the time of the bombing) [Excerpt of artist comment] The place was full of victims, who were resting on each other or lying down, some already dead. Those alive invariably craved for water…. I poured the water from my flask into the mouth of the woman on my right, but she didn’t swallow. Her eyes were open but she was dead. Maggots had already infested her wounds. Most were left untreated, and on the brink of death. I wonder to this day whether they survived or died. I pray for the peaceful repose of their souls. |
