Description | Near an air-raid shelter, soldiers help junior high school students suffering from burns. 2,000m from the hypocenter, near Hijiyama Hill air-raid shelter (Hijiyama-hon-machi, Minami-ku) August 6,1945, around 9:30 a.m. Toshifumi Goto (19 at time of bombing, 49 at time of drawing) Explanation in picture Soldiers helped people without stopping to eat or drink. When our Red Cross rescue unit of eight arrived at the hill, waves of people moved toward us. I was struck by the junior high students・white headbands. Girls and boys alike were burned bright red. The skin on their arms had peeled and hung from them, attached only at their fingernails, as if they had partially removed their gloves. I painfully recall the voice of a boy who asked, "What't going to happen to me?" Thousands, no, tens of thousands, were on that hill. |
