Description | They used all the strength they had to get to the riverbed. Then they collapsed. 1,450m from the hypocenter/Near Tokiwa Bridge Around 9:30 a.m. on August 6, 1945 Chie Harada (18 at the time of the bombing, 47 when she drew this picture) Explanation in picture Their clothes were burned to rags. Skin directly exposed to the heat ray was peeling like that of a boiled potato, hanging from torsos, ears, and hands. Hair was gone except where shielded by hats. Wide open eyes in expressionless, red faces. Red, peeling lips. Backs with skin cleanly peeled off. Blood gushing from red bodies. By and by, with death near, their weak voices strained to ask for water. When I gave it to them, they gulped it eagerly; relieved, they breathed their last. |
