Description | It was heartbreaking to think that the numerous bodies floating in the river would remain unclaimed 1,290m from the hypocenter Near Sumiyoshi Shrine Kako-machi (now, Sumiyoshi-cho) August 9, 1945, around noon Drawn by Shoichi Furukawa (age 32 at the time of the bombing) [Excerpt of artist comment] From the river bank near Sumiyoshi Shrine I saw numerous bodies of victims floating in the river. It was no longer possible to tell if they were men or women. The skin had peeled off many of them, and they were bloated very badly. The stench wafted through on the wind. It was heartbreaking to think that all these people would end up in the sea, unidentified and unclaimed. I pray for their souls. |
