Description | Faintly breathing victims lay on straw mats among many dead. 3,050m from the hypocenter/In a schoolroom of Koi Elementary School August 7, 1945 Fumie Ishikawa (16 at the time of the bombing, 46 when she drew this picture) Explanation in picture Laid out and lined up on straw mats, their skin was burnt, scraped off, and hanging. Their ears were torn off, their fingernails and toenails were peeling. They had water blisters, gouged eyes, and clenched teeth. "Water, water, give me water!" "I want water!" Relief workers went around pouring water into their mouths from a large kettle. Most appeared to be dead. This room-so crowded there was no place to plant a foot-was a painting of hell. I place my hands together in prayer. |
