Description | An orange flash and everything changed 1,700 m from the hypocenter, Yokogawa Station (Yokogawa-cho) August 6, 1945, 8:15 a.m. Masao Yamashita (36 at the time of the bombing, 66 when he drew this picture) Explanation in picture I entered a Sanyo Trunk Line train standing at a platform at Yokogawa Station. I was with a firefighter named Haramoto. The train was almost full. Just after 8:10 a.m., we saw a flash of light. The sky turned orange. Then, with a low rumble, the air was full of dirt, dust and debris. Twilight dim at 8:15 a.m. Haramoto's face was covered with black blood. Injured people everywhere. Everything had changed completely. The two of us held an older woman who was spurting blood. We carried her to a safe place at the side of the track. Thinking there had been an air raid, we returned to the fire station. The bridge over the track was twisted like taffy. Railroad ties here and there started to burn. |
