Description | A father clasped his motionless child and screamed; people rushed onto the collapsed bridge and fell into the water. 1,400m from the hypocenter/Kami-temma-cho Around 10 a.m. on August 6, 1945 Saburo Hata (25 at the time of the bombing, 55 when he drew this picture) Explanation in picture The wooden Kita-hirose Bridge collapsed under the weight of people seeking refuge on it from both Kami-temma-cho and Hirose-machi. People continued to cram onto it, piling on top of one another and falling into the Temma River, which was at low tide. They drowned. Right in front of me a father clutching a lifeless child screamed. A woman was crawling in a fancy soaked kimono after crossing the river. A number of women who crossed the river were naked below the waist, burnt tatters of black monpe (work pants) hanging from them. They looked more dead than alive. |
