Description | The enormous pillar of fire that appeared after the explosion of the atomic bomb 1,000m from the hypocenter August 6, 1945 Kazuo Matsumuro (32 at the time of the bombing, 61 when he drew this picture) Explanation in picture As the tremendous pillar of fire whirled higher, the debris it sucked up sparkled in the sunlight, at once horrifying and unspeakably beautiful. On this clear mid-summer day, that mushroom was the only cloud in the sky. Here and there, rays of sunlight broke through. |
