Description | Burned corpses scattered as far as the eye could reach in each direction 550m from the hypocenter / Takajo-machi (now, 2 chome, Honkawa-cho, Naka-ku) Around 2 p.m. on August 9,1945 Saburo Hata (25 at the time of the bombing, 55 when he drew this picture) Explanation in picture The Takajo-machi back street was still smoldering. Corpses lay here and there on the pavement. Among the hot ruins, volunteer units cremated the corpses. Burned brown and swollen, the corpses appeared neither male nor female. Even their relatives probably could not have identified them. People unable to outrun the flames were roasted as if in a covered pan. Everywhere, a plain of corpses. |
