Description | Disaster certificate Donated by Michimasa Hirata Michimasa Hirata (then, 9) was at his house in Ushita-machi with his father and aunt when they all experienced the A-bomb. As soon as his father, Yoshimichi (then, 45), saw the flash go off like a flare bomb, he hurried Michimasa and then the Aunt into the bomb shelter in the yard just as the blast overtook him. Yoshimichi was pierced by glass fragments and covered in blood. Soon, the flames started to swirl around their neighborhood. Yoshimichi, Michimasa, and a neighbor started a bucket brigade with water from a fire cistern and prevented the fire from completely destroying the houses. In the evening, the flames subsided and they made their way to Kawauchi Village (now, Kawauchi, Asaminimi-ku) and were pleased to be reunited with family members who had evacuated there earlier. |
