Mr. Kaiso Kodama (then, 51) was exposed to the A-bombing when he was engaged in the labor service. Suffering severe burns, he was carried to the Army Clothing Depot. Kaiso’s face swelled so much that his oldest son Hajime (then, 17) could not recognize him until Kaiso asked “Are you Hajime?” when they met each other on the 6th. That night, Hajime returned to his family to let them know about his father’s condition and to get a handcart to carry Kaiso back home. On the following day, when Hajime returned to the Clothing Depot, Kaiso had already died. The number of the dead was so great that Kaiso’s body could not be cremated alone. Accordingly, Hajime was not sure whether what he had received was really the remains of his father.
These items, which Kaiso had with him at the time of the atomic bombing, were preserved for a long time with considerable care by his family. Kaiso’s wife Okiku did not talk much about Kaiso after the end of the war. On August 6th every year, however, she never failed to visit the Atomic Bomb Memorial Mound. After the death of his father, Hajime worked very hard as the head of his family.
