Setsuko Oki (then, 35) had just checked her baggage as she prepared to return to her family home in Fukuyama. When the atomic bomb exploded, everything went pitch black. She had to work feverishly to crawl out and away from the station. Her companion, Sumako Horimoto, suffered serious injuries and died within hours. Setsuko rushed to her brother’s house in front of the station, but found it demolished by the blast. In the rubble, she discovered the bodies of her sister-in-law and 6-year-old niece, the mother’s arms and body still wrapped around her daughter as if trying to protect her.
