Description | The donor's husband, Mitsuaki Yoshimura, fetched these coins from his burned-out home. Mitsuaki (then, 15), was a student in the upper grades at Kanzaki Elementary School. He was exposed to the bomb at home with his friends. One of his friends was trapped under the collapsed house. He was unable to save him due to the approaching flames. Later, Mitsuaki suffered from symptoms of A-bomb disease, such as diarrhea, bloody stools, debilitating fatigue and eye disorders. Though he rarely talked about the A-bombing because of the bitter memory of failing to save his friend's life, Mitsuaki treasured these coins until the day he died. |
