Description | Glass fragments removed from father's body Donated by Yukiyoshi Banba Approx. 1,100m from the hypocenter Kako-machi Yukiro Banba (then, 17), the donor's father, experienced the atomic bombing from inside the police academy. His head and back were riddled with fragments of glass and he was pinned under the collapsed building. Somehow managing to escape, he spent the next 2-3 days making his way to his home in Sera Town, Sera County. Once there, he visited a nearby clinic, where they removed 47 pieces of glass. Although he received treatment, the wounds on his back were especially serious and he spent the next 2 years confined to bed. This glass fragment was removed from Yukiro's head on September 2, 2007, 62 years after the atomic bombing. Yukiro died on September 8, 2007 and this other glass fragment, which had been imbedded in his shoulder, was found in his cremated ashes. |
