Description | Ikuko Shintani (then, 15) was a third-year student at Hiroshima Girls Commercial School. She was exposed to the bombing at her mobilization worksite. She sensed a flash and as soon as turned her face to the window, she was blown hard by the blast. When she came to, her body was filled with glass fragments. Countless glass shards pierced her deeply, some of which remain in her body. These fragments were surgically removed in 1954. These pieces emerged and pressed hard enough against her skin to be seen from the outside, causing her intense pain that led to the operation to remove them. Ikuko continues to this day suffering from illnesses apparently caused by her atomic bomb exposure. |
