Mr. Mamoru Hirakiuchi was exposed to the A-bombing while living in Matsubara-cho. Worried about his life and death, his parents and his wife Tomeko in Kure, entered Hiroshima with small rice balls and canteens. Although they went to the city every day and searched for Mamoru in many places, they could not find him. His parents told Tomeko, who was pregnant at the time, “We cannot find him anywhere. We had better give up on him.” Nevertheless, Tomeko could not simply give up and wanted to see him again by any means possible. She asked his parents to allow her to go to Hiroshima just one more day to search for him. On the sixth day, shouting “Mamoru-san! Mamoru-san!” Tomeko engaged in a frantic search, and finally found him. His body had turned black with no skin remaining due to burns, and there was no way of distinguishing his front from his back. Tomeko helped him eat a rice ball, but he vomited it up. On August 11th, he died.
