Tomiko Kamei (then, 13) was in Class 6, second year. She had injured the sole of her foot while working the previous day, but to fulfill her responsibility as class president, she went to the worksite on August 6 and encountered the bomb. Her mother Hisayo and older sister Yoshiko entered the city early on the 7th and eventually found Tomiko in a relief station on Kanawajima Island. Tomiko suffered serious burns over most of her body. Her face was too swollen to recognize. Hisayo nursed her desperately but Tomiko passed away early on the 9th. |
