Description | Akihiro Takahashi (then, 14), a second-year student at Hiroshima Municipal Junior High School, was exposed in the schoolyard during morning assembly. He was momentarily struck deaf and then realized that the blast had blown him some 10 meters from where he had been standing. His uniform was tattered and burnt, his skin dangled from severe burns on his back, the back of his head, his arms and legs. A shard of glass penetrated the base of his right index finger. After managing to make it back to his house, he immediately passed out and entered a coma for nearly three weeks until miraculously returning to consciousness. He could not move his right elbow or the fingers on his right hand, and the nail of his index finger continued to grow abnormally thick and black, even after repeatedly cutting it off. This nail was cut off on August 19, 2007. |
