Description | Piece of Lead Donated by Yoshinari Nakamoto Approx. 520m from the hypocenter Tsukamoto-cho (now, Sakai-machi) Demobilized and sent home after the war, Mr. Katsuto Nakamoto (then, 20) headed to the remains of the burned company that had been operated by his father Katsuso. Everything around the company had been consumed by fire. The company, a three-story reinforced concrete building, had also been completely destroyed and reduced to ashes. Together with his elder brother Yasuo (then, 26) and his elder sister Fumiko (then, 25), most of the company’s approximately 35 employees exposed to the A-bombing had died. Katsuto intended to gather everybody’s bones, but everything had been completely burned. Bones of the deceased were scattered everywhere and it was totally impossible to identify which bones belonged to who, so he could not gather them. This is a sake bottle which once melted, and pieces of printing of the typography at the company had been blown into the bottle before its reconsolidation. Before the atomic bombing, the bottle had been used as a flower vase and was displayed near the typography. Believing that the item was the embodiment of the souls of his brother and sister and the company’s employees, Katsuto preserved it with considerable care until he died. |
