Description | Donated by Hiroshima Teishin Hospital, Japan Post Holdings, Co., Ltd. 1,370m from the hypocenter Moto-machi (now, Higashi-hakushima) Hiroshima Teishin was the first hospital in Japan to install big windows. However, they were shattered by bombs, their frames disfigured and interiors burnt. Even though most medical equipment was lost, all of the patients had been released in July anyway in preparation for air raids, but all employees working on that day were exposed to the A-bomb. This hospital and the Hiroshima Red Cross Hospital became the only remaining hospitals operating within 2km of the hypocenter and the staff worked continuously day and night to treat the hordes of patients that arrived. In and around the hospital, the air was filled with the sound of inpatients groaning, begging for water, crying out for relatives, complaining of the cold, and retching violently. Nothing was worse. |
