Description | Melted, fused Buddhist altarpiece Donated by Koichi Akimoto Approx. 650 m from the hypocenter Sakan-cho (now, Tokaichi-machi 1-chome) Yoshiko Akimoto (then, 31) was exposed at work in Nakahiro-machi, about 1,500 meters from the hypocenter. She escaped the fire by jumping into a river amid the black rain. From her place of refuge, she watched the city burn and prayed all night long for her family’s safety. They never even found the bones of her mother, Shige, who was probably exposed near the house. Yoshiko retrieved this Buddhist altarpiece from the ashes of her house. |
