Description | School badges Donated by Yoshiharu Hirahara Approx. 1,050m from the hypocenter Kami-nagarekawa-cho (now, Kami-nobori-cho) Ritsuko Masuda, the donor's wife, was a third-year student at Hiroshima Jogakuin Girls High School who had been assigned to work at the Hiroshima Railway Bureau's Investigation Division housed at the school. She experienced the bombing while at work. Pinned under the collapsed school building, her back had been sprayed by pieces of broken glass. Although Ritsuko somehow managed to free herself, many of her classmates were unable to escape from the collapsed building and died in the ensuing fire. After some time, she arrived at the Western Drill Ground where she took refuge for the night. On the following day, she managed to return home. Although she had no serious burns or other injuries, she repeatedly became ill and vomited blood. Even though she went to see a doctor, there was no medicine and she was unable to receive the treatment she needed. After the war, her physical condition was always poor. |
