Description | Charred glasses and case Donated by Ayano Hiragaki 500m from the hypocenter Tsukamoto-cho (now, Sakai-machi 1-chome) These were possessions of Tamotsu Hiragaki (then, 52), the donor's husband. Tamotsu was the proprietor of a handbag store in Hirataya-cho (now, Hondori) and was in the offices of the Handbag Dealers' Association when the A-bomb was detonated. Although his store was completely razed and his house destroyed, Tamotsu's wife Ayano (then, 45) was unharmed as she was away from Hiroshima on business. She returned to Hiroshima on August 7, the day after the bombing, and walked about the city searching for her husband and eldest son Daisaku (then, 27). On August 25 she found these glasses and case belonging to her deceased husband among the ruins of the office. She also found the remains of Daisaku on August 21 at an evacuation shelter. |
